When I began my journey with Habitat as an AmeriCorps member, I was part of a small but dynamic team consisting of a construction site supervisor, myself, and a dedicated volunteer who truly exemplified commitment. This volunteer guided me through many projects and generously pitched in whenever possible. I witnessed firsthand how he brought warmth and humor to our work, treating our team to lunch on frigid days, ensuring we were energized and ready to continue building. Conversations with him revealed a wealth of shared interests, from a deep admiration for the environment to culinary delights. We spoke of his daughter’s dedication to environmental work, and we exchanged pimento cheese and ancient grains during the holidays. His contributions were more than physical labor; they were about nurturing connections and sharing life stories. It became evident to me that volunteers like him are not just there to lend a hand; they come to create community, learning about each other’s lives and interests.
