The Future of Hope Springs

By Kailey Truczinskas

Charlotte’s Greater Bethel AME Church and Habitat Charlotte Region Celebrate Progress on Hope Springs Development

Greater Bethel AME Church and Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region are excited to share updates on the Hope Springs development, a planned affordable housing community on a 9-acre tract of land in North Charlotte. This initiative, which began with the church’s decision to sell the land to Habitat Charlotte Region, is now making significant progress.

Located on Peachtree Road between Hwy 16 and Beattie’s Ford Road, the Hope Springs community will have up to 34 affordable homes. This strategically positioned property is designed to integrate seamlessly with two existing neighborhoods, enhancing connectivity and improving access for first responders.

Since the initial announcement, many updates have been made on the development. The installation of curbs is complete, and driveway improvements are expected to be finalized shortly. The project is moving into its finishing stages, with water mains nearing completion. In the coming weeks, gravel and pavement work will commence, bringing us closer to realizing this transformative project.

Pastor Reverend Dr. Abdue Knox, who led the church’s decision to sell the land for affordable housing rather than to a private developer, has seen his vision come to fruition. “We chose to make a meaningful impact on our community by partnering with Habitat Charlotte Region,” said Dr. Knox. “The progress on the Hope Springs development is a testament to our commitment to improving lives through innovative land use.”

“We’re tremendously grateful to Dr. Knox and the Greater Bethel congregation for their support of our mission by allowing us to purchase the land at below market value,” said Laura Belcher, President & CEO of Habitat Charlotte Region. “The property itself is beautiful, and we can already envision the scores of families who will benefit from the wealth-generating benefits of becoming homeowners here.”

In addition to the development of affordable housing, Habitat Charlotte Region will transfer one of the completed homes to Greater Bethel AME Church. This home will be used to assist church members in need of housing support, further demonstrating the church’s dedication to serving its community.

The Hope Springs development stands as a powerful example of civic leadership and collaboration, setting a precedent for future land use projects and enhancing the economic futures of the families who will call this new neighborhood home.
