What started three decades ago as a conversation among three women working at Habitat Charlotte Region has grown into an international movement where women-led volunteer crews build affordable housing throughout the globe. For more than thirty years, Habitat Charlotte Region has hosted our annual Women Build.

Women Build is a movement that unites and empowers women in the Charlotte Region who collectively make an impact on affordable homeownership in the communities where they work and live.

Thirty-two years ago, a team of dedicated Habitat staffers and female volunteers teamed up to do something extraordinary – use an all-female crew to build a Habitat home for Janet Stewart, a single mom who was struggling to find a safe, decent place to raise her daughters. Learn how the first Habitat Women Build had a profound impact on Janet and her family.

From humble seeds sown in Charlotte three decades ago, Habitat Women Build has now grown into a women’s movement of an international scale, with Habitat affiliates participating around the globe.
