What started three decades ago as a conversation among three women working at Habitat Charlotte Region has grown into an international movement where women-led volunteer crews build affordable housing throughout the globe. For thirty years Habitat Charlotte Region has hosted our annual Women Build; in honor of this milestone, we are excited to announce the launch of Women Build 30 (WB30).

WB30 is a movement that unites and empowers women in the Charlotte Region who collectively make an impact on affordable homeownership in the communities where they work and live.

Many thanks to the amazing partners that are supporting this year’s anniversary initiatives!

Women Build 30 Book Club

WB30 Summer Read Book Club

Participate in the Women Build movement by joining our first book club in partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library! We have selected The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation, in which writer and scholar Anna Malaika Tubbs celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America’s most pivotal heroes.

The virtual book discussion will take place from 6 – 7pm over a series of three Thursday evenings: June 24, July 22 & August 26. We encourage you to sign up for all three so you don’t miss any of the wonderful discussion that is sure to take place.

The first 10 people to register for the first gathering in June will receive a free copy of the book!

Thirty years ago, a team of dedicated Habitat staffers and female volunteers teamed up to do something extraordinary – use an all-female crew to build a Habitat home for Janet Stewart, a single mom who was struggling to find a safe, decent place to raise her daughters. Learn how the first Habitat Women Build had a profound impact on Janet and her family.

From humble seeds sown in Charlotte three decades ago, Habitat Women Build has now grown into women’s movement of international scale with Habitat affiliates participating around the globe.

WB30 Volunteer Opportunities

WB30 is kicking off three home construction activities – a new home build, an existing home rehab and a Critical Home Repair project. Each project highlights three ways Habitat Charlotte Region works to build and maintain affordable homeownership for women in our community.

Due to COVID-19, volunteer opportunities are limited, but there are spots available! Head to our volunteer registration portal and look for the shifts marked as Women Build. If you have any issues or questions, please email volunteer@habitatCLTregion.org.
