Volunteer FAQs

Find answers to commonly asked questions.

Are there any age requirements for construction volunteering?

Yes. All construction volunteers must be at least 16-years-old, no exceptions. Some tasks have an 18+ policy (roof work, some vinyl siding shifts, etc.). The age requirement is specified for each shift. Task restrictions for 16 & 17-year-old volunteers:

  • Cannot work at heights 6 feet & above (no roof work)
  • Cannot use power tools
  • Cannot participate in demolition tasks or crawl space work

Parents of 16 and 17-year-olds must sign the additional minor release waiver.

Is construction experience needed in order to volunteer?

No, not at all!

Previous experience never hurts, but it isn’t necessary. All construction sites have a site supervisor that will provide all of the on-the-job training needed for the day’s tasks.

Are construction shifts rain or shine?

Unless you hear otherwise from a Habitat Charlotte Region staff member via email (by 6:45 a.m. the day of your scheduled shift), plan to volunteer rain or shine. Site supervisors can often adjust tasks to accommodate for inclement weather.

What kinds of tasks are done by volunteers on Habitat Charlotte Region construction sites?

If you’re not sure about the task(s) assigned to a volunteer shift for which you’re interested in registering, take a look at these brief descriptions of on-site tasks.

What if I can't volunteer for an entire day?

We have half-day volunteer options available at any of our Charlotte Region ReStore locations and Julia’s Café & Books. Head over to the Charlotte Region Restore site to see how you can get involved.

There are also three-hour volunteer shifts on occasional Book Drives through Julia’s Café. Read more about Book Drives on the Individual Volunteer Opportunities page.

Do I need to bring tools with me?

All necessary tools and safety gear will be provided by Habitat Charlotte Region. If preferred, you may bring your own. Please label all personal tools with your name. Although not mandatory, volunteers are suggested to bring their own work gloves, if available.

Will there be water and food provided?

Water is provided on-site. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle to reduce waste and ensure proper hydration. Lunch is not provided by Habitat Charlotte Region during the volunteer shift. Volunteers can bring a bagged lunch, go off-site during the lunch break or arrange to have food delivered to the site.

I’m having trouble signing up to volunteer on the website. What can I do?
  1. Make sure you are using an up-to-date version of your browser, such as Chrome, Firefox or Safari.
  2. Make sure you are not using a shared email address that may have already been registered by someone else, such as a spouse.
  3. If all else fails, please take a screenshot and send it (along with a description of your problem) to volunteer@habitatCLTregion.org.
Why hasn't my time tracker total updated since my last volunteer shift?

There is a delay to the time tracker since hours are entered manually for construction shifts. For ReStore shifts, staff occasionally has to correct the totals created by the kiosk.

I've registered to volunteer, where can I access the necessary waiver?
