FAQs

Find answers to commonly asked questions.

Do I need previous experience to volunteer?

Not at all! Prior experience can be helpful but isn’t required. All volunteer opportunities include any necessary training or guidance on-site, so you’ll be supported throughout your shift.

Is Advocacy political?

Habitat Charlotte Region is strictly nonpartisan. While we do not support specific political parties or candidates, our work is deeply involved in the public policy space.

Advocacy is about using our collective voice to influence the systems that govern where and how people live. Here is how we define that distinction:

  • Policy, Not Partisanship: We support affordable housing efforts at the local, state, and federal levels. This means advocating for laws and funding that make homeownership accessible, regardless of which party is in office.

  • Empowering Communities: We advocate for policies that give residents a seat at the table in development and land-use decisions. This ensures that community growth reflects the needs of everyone, especially those historically excluded from homeownership.

  • A Humanitarian and Economic Priority: We treat housing as a fundamental need. By engaging with leaders, we highlight the clear economic and social benefits that stable, affordable housing brings to the entire Charlotte region.

In short, while the “how” of housing can be a subject of public debate, our “why” remains constant: ensuring everyone has a decent place to call home.

Can I be involved in more than one way?

Absolutely! We believe that building a stronger community requires a variety of voices and hands. There are several unique ways to partner with us beyond the traditional build site:

  • Volunteer Opportunities: From helping out at our ReStores or Julia’s Cafe & Books to assisting with administrative tasks or joining a committee, there is a spot for every skill set.

  • Advocacy Engagement: Use your voice to support affordable housing policies. You can join our advocacy e-newsletter to stay informed on local development decisions, local activations, and upcoming advocacy training sessions.

  • Global Village: Take your passion for housing beyond the Charlotte region. Our Global Village program allows you to travel and build alongside families in other countries, witnessing the universal impact of a decent place to live.

  • Special Events: Join us for community-centric events throughout the year which bring our neighbors together for a common cause.

Whether you have a few hours a month to give or want to dive into a long-term project, we are excited to find the right fit for you.

How does Habitat work with families?

We partner with local families to help open the door to safe, stable, and affordable homeownership. Through new home construction and the purchase of renovated homes, families have the opportunity to build a foundation for their future with the support of our team every step of the way. We also support families through critical repairs that help longtime residents remain safely in their homes.

Does Habitat give homes away for free?

No, Habitat for Humanity does not give homes away. We believe in the power of partnership. The goal of our Homebuyer Program is to empower families to achieve the strength, stability, and independence they need to build a better life. Here is how the process works:

  • Affordable Mortgages: Habitat homeowners purchase their homes through an affordable mortgage. Their monthly mortgage payments are then cycled back into the community to help build even more homes for future neighbors.

  • Financial Preparation: Before purchasing, participants go through a Mortgage Readiness assessment and complete financial education. This includes workshops on budgeting, credit building, and the long-term responsibilities of homeownership.

  • Active Partnership: Every future homeowner invests time into the program. This includes completing volunteer hours by working on build sites, in our ReStores, or attending financial education classes.

By the time an individual or family closes on their home, they have invested in their personal growth and their community, leaving them prepared for the lifelong journey of homeownership.

How does the ReStore support Habitat?

The Habitat ReStore is much more than a home improvement store—it is a powerful engine that helps fuel our mission to build and repair homes. When you shop, donate, or volunteer at one of our locations in Mecklenburg, Gaston, or Iredell counties, you are directly contributing to local housing solutions.

Every donation and every purchase helps us get one step closer to a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

How does Julia's Cafe & Books support Habitat?

Named after our first volunteer Executive Director, Julia Maulden, Julia’s Café & Books is a social enterprise that transforms your daily coffee break into a direct investment in our community.

Much like our ReStores, 100% of the proceeds from Julia’s—including every latte, local pastry, and book sale—go toward supporting affordable homeownership in our community.

I want to help. Can I start small?

Yes—you can start wherever you feel comfortable. Many volunteers begin with a single-day experience at a construction site, ReStore, or Julia’s Café & Books. Short shifts and flexible opportunities make it easy to get involved, even with a busy schedule. From there, you can explore other ways to serve or choose to stay connected through ongoing volunteer teams, advocacy efforts, or community events. Whatever your capacity, every contribution makes a difference.
