Meadows at Plato Price

The Meadows at Plato Price carries a story worth knowing.

Built on the grounds of the historic Plato Price School — an all-Black K–12 school that served West Charlotte from the 1910s — this 39-home Habitat for Humanity community transformed a long-vacant site into a thriving neighborhood that honors the past while building toward the future.

Today, the community features 39 beautiful homes, along with amenities like a playground and community garden—providing families in West Charlotte with a thriving place to call home.

The Story

The Long History Behind Plato Price

The Meadows at Plato Price stands on land once home to the historically significant Plato Price School. Built in the 1910s as an all-Black K–12 school serving West Charlotte, it closed decades later after segregation ended. For years, the building sat vacant—until the City of Charlotte donated the property to Habitat for Humanity.

“It makes me feel indescribably happy to know that now that property where I walked there are new people coming… it makes my heartbeat differently to know that now rather than just look at an empty field, I’m going to see people with homes and with children for our future.” – Nellie Ashford – Former Plato Price Student.

With support from cornerstone investors – including the Ally Charitable FoundationMyers Park United Methodist Church, Merancas Foundation, and the City of Charlotte— the dream to transform this land into a thriving community was born.

Today, the property now stands as a vibrant 39-home development, creating affordable homeownership opportunities in an area where the homeownership rate (26%) remains far below the county average (57%).
